Portsmouth Guildhall’s basement has been transformed into an inspiring new space for young people, thanks to a significant £1.3 million investment. Officially launched as The BASE, this vibrant creative hub is designed specifically for individuals aged 11-25, offering a range of facilities and opportunities aimed at fostering artistic expression and personal development.

Our solution

STAGE 1 – Demolition
A complex and time-sensitive project, with construction services delivered in a live environment with precision and expertise. Key services included demolition, drainage construction, and a full facility strip-out, with specialist concrete cutting undertaken in locations up to one meter deep. Our approach ensured all areas were prepared to shell and core, meeting rigorous project timelines with approved extensions.

STAGE 2 – CAT A fit-out
Chalk delivered a CAT A fit-out enhancing common areas: hallways, staircases, lifts, and multiple toilet facilities. Specialist services included detailed electrical layouts, sophisticated lighting system controls, data cabling installations, and HVAC zoning solutions. Comprehensive fire protection systems were also implemented and integrated into existing infrastructure, including fire detection systems, smoke alarms, and suppression systems to comply with building regulations.

STAGE 3 – CAT B fit-out
Chalk executed a CAT B fit-out tailored to specific requirements, outfitting shared spaces including common rooms, music studios, and ICT studios with unique finishes. This included selecting specific flooring materials, wall treatments, ceiling solutions, and precise installations of lighting fixtures and fittings. These efforts ensured The Portsmouth Guildhall project was completed to exacting standards, demonstrating Chalk’s commitment to delivering high-quality construction services on time and within budget.

The outcome

The BASE boasts a variety of resources, including a fully equipped band room, a state-of-the-art production studio with a DJ mixing space, a multimedia suite with advanced software, a versatile performance space, and a lounge/exhibition area. This safe and welcoming environment is crafted to engage and inspire young people from the PO (Portsmouth) postcode area, particularly those who may not otherwise have access to such creative opportunities.
