Chalk hands over new genetic testing facility
By Bradley Eccleshare, MarketingNonacus, a genetic diagnostic company based in Birmingham, has recently relocated to new offices and state-of-the-art laboratory, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing expansion. Chalk, a design consultancy and fit out contractor, transformed the former Wates facilities management offices into a cutting-edge facility for Nonacus and Informed Genomics, both a part of Advanced Genomics Group.
Chalk fully supported Nonacus from the initial concept stage, interpreting client requirements, managing information flow from various consultants, and presenting at each project milestone to ensure client approval. The full internal spatial redesign accommodated a head office and laboratory facility, requiring careful coordination of mechanical and electrical (M&E) services, small power, data, fire alarms, security, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), access strategy, and specific laboratory equipment.
Chalk led the design from concept stages to coordinated technical design, manufacturing, and installation. They developed full design packages, including proposed, demolition, partition setting out, small power, reflective ceiling, flooring, lighting, furniture, and internal door and window schedules. Their interiors team also helped develop the full fixed and loose furniture design for procurement and manufacture. Chalk’s collaboration with Nonacus extended beyond the building layout to interior design consultancy including the specification of furniture, fixtures, and equipment. The design service procured the Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FF&E) and ensured each piece was not only functional but also aligned with the aesthetic vision for the space, creating an environment conducive to productivity and innovation.
A key feature of the new offices is the Dali digitally controlled internal lighting system. This state-of-the-art system allows for adjustable lighting levels, ensuring optimal illumination for different tasks while contributing to the overall ambiance of the workspace.
In line with Nonacus’ commitment to sustainability, Chalk also specified finishes that complement various sustainability accreditations. This conscious choice of materials underscores the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility and aligns with its broader ethos.
To enhance client engagement and internal specification, individual Room Data sheets were created. Detailed visualisation, including a full project rendered flythrough, was developed to support client stakeholder buy-in and staff engagement. Meticulous project management and delivery was undertaken, with Chalk engaging with the local authority and fire brigade to achieve full sign off. Regular site visits were conducted to inspect the work and address any arising site issues. Our projects delivery team and supply partners collaborated to achieve a state-of-the-art fit out that paves the way for future developments.
The new premises are just the beginning, with future plans including potential warehousing and additional office locations. This move equips Nonacus and Informed Genomics for continued innovation and expansion in the life sciences field.
