Chalk delivers The Base

Chalk Celebrates the Launch of The BASE at Portsmouth Guildhall.

Portsmouth, Hampshire 12.July.24 – Following an extensive £1.3 million renovation project, Chalk, as the contracted construction partner, celebrates the grand opening of The BASE at Portsmouth Guildhall. This innovative initiative transforms the Guildhall’s basement into a vibrant creative hub specifically designed for young people aged 11-25 within the PO postcode area.

The BASE offers a dynamic array of facilities including a band room with state-of-the-art equipment, a production studio with DJ mixing capabilities, a multimedia suite with specialised software, a versatile performance space, and a lounge/exhibition area. This welcoming environment aims to nurture creativity and provide a safe space where young individuals can explore their artistic talents.

To introduce the community to The BASE, a series of drop-in sessions and workshops will be held throughout the summer. These sessions, such as ‘Build a Band’, ‘Drum and Bass Open Decks’, and ‘Cyphers with Music Fusion’, will showcase the space and allow young people to engage with its resources, including electric and acoustic guitars, creative software, and professional-grade audio equipment.

Recognising the importance of inclusivity, The BASE offers free memberships to all 11-25 year olds in the PO postcode area, with a focus on those who are traditionally underrepresented in creative opportunities. This initiative aims to break down barriers and provide access to cultural activities that promote mental well-being and social development.

The development of The BASE was made possible through collaboration with several funding partners, including Portsmouth City Council, Arts Council England, The Foyle Foundation, and The Clothworkers’ Foundation. Their contributions, along with the support of local stakeholders and the expertise of Chalk and other project partners, have been instrumental in realising this transformative space.

Chalk is proud to have played a key role in the construction and development of The BASE, reflecting our commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and supporting youth-focused initiatives that enrich the cultural fabric of Portsmouth. Chalk were engaged to complete Category A and B construction fit out services including expert concrete cutting, steel fabrication, electrical works, and bespoke joinery.
